GENUP vs BICUP: Which NC Real Estate Update Course Do You Actually Need?

Updated: Oct 12

GENUP or BICUP? Learn which NC real estate Update course you need based on your BIC or BIC-Eligible status, how the 8-hour CE requirement works, and the June 10 deadline.

If you are a North Carolina real estate broker, your annual continuing education requirement includes 8 hours of CE:

  • One 4-hour mandatory Update course

  • One 4-hour NCREC-approved elective

The Update course you need depends on your current status. Most brokers take GENUP, while Brokers-in-Charge and brokers with BIC-Eligible status must take BICUP.

Taking the wrong Update course can affect your BIC or BIC-Eligible status. Use this guide to determine which course applies to you before registering.

GENUP vs BICUP?

Course

Who Should Take It?

Length

Requirement

GENUP

Brokers without BIC or BIC-Eligible status

4 hours

Mandatory Update course

BICUP

Brokers-in-Charge and brokers with BIC-Eligible status

4 hours

Mandatory Update course

Both courses are required Update options, not optional enrichment classes. You must also complete one separate 4-hour elective to meet the full 8-hour annual CE requirement.

The current CE year runs from July 1 through June 10. For the 2026–27 license year, brokers must complete the required CE by June 10, 2027.

North Carolina brokers cannot complete CE classes from June 10 through June 30. Plan your Update course and elective before the end of the CE period rather than waiting for the final available dates.

Do You Need GENUP?

GENUP is generally the correct Update course if you do not hold BIC or BIC-Eligible status.

This includes North Carolina brokers who are:

  • Provisional brokers subject to annual CE

  • Full brokers without BIC status

  • Brokers who are not BIC-Eligible

  • Brokers who do not plan to maintain or use BIC-Eligible status

The General Update covers current information that applies to everyday brokerage practice. Depending on the current license year, topics may include:

  • Appraisal changes and their effect on transactions

  • Common North Carolina Real Estate Commission questions

  • Due diligence and closing issues

  • Fake-seller scams and identity verification

  • Fair housing responsibilities

  • Current laws and rules

  • License renewal and education requirements

The goal is to help you understand how current requirements affect your work with buyers, sellers, and other brokers.

For the 2026–27 license year, Encompass offers the NC General Update (GENUP) course live on Zoom. The class is 4 hours and costs $65.

Do You Need BICUP?

You need BICUP if you are:

  • Currently designated as a Broker-in-Charge

  • BIC-Eligible, even if you are not currently serving as a BIC

BICUP is designed for brokers who have responsibilities connected to brokerage supervision, office policies, and compliance oversight.

The course may include practical instruction about:

  • Current law and rule changes

  • Fraud prevention and seller verification

  • Fair housing in daily brokerage activity

  • License renewal and CE requirements

  • BIC supervision responsibilities

  • Written office policies

  • Oversight of brokers and support personnel

  • Common questions about brokerage operations

BICUP includes the general Update information that brokers need, along with additional content relevant to supervising a brokerage.

You can review the NC Broker-in-Charge Update course details for information about the current 2026–27 course.

What Does BIC-Eligible Status Mean?

BIC-Eligible status is a status that allows a broker to qualify for designation as a Broker-in-Charge when the other requirements are met.

A broker may hold BIC-Eligible status without currently serving as a BIC. That distinction is important because BIC-Eligible brokers still need to take BICUP.

If you are unsure whether you hold BIC-Eligible status, check your current record with the North Carolina Real Estate Commission. You can also review NCREC information about BIC-Eligible status and BIC designation.

Do not choose your course based only on whether you are currently managing an office. Your official status matters.

What Happens If You Take the Wrong Update Course?

If you are a BIC or BIC-Eligible broker and take GENUP instead of BICUP, you may maintain an active real estate license, but you can lose your BIC-Eligible status.

For a current BIC, losing BIC-Eligible status can also affect your BIC designation.

A broker without BIC or BIC-Eligible status generally should not take BICUP simply because the course includes additional information. BICUP is intended for brokers with the applicable status, and the course may not satisfy the Update requirement for someone who does not qualify for it.

The practical rule is simple:

  • No BIC or BIC-Eligible status: Take GENUP.

  • BIC or BIC-Eligible status: Take BICUP.

If your status recently changed, verify your record before registering.

What If You Plan to Become a BIC?

If you are thinking about becoming a Broker-in-Charge in the future, first determine whether you already hold BIC-Eligible status.

If you are already BIC-Eligible

Take BICUP to maintain that status, even if you are not currently serving as a BIC.

If you are not BIC-Eligible yet

Take the Update course that matches your current status. If you do not currently hold BIC or BIC-Eligible status, that generally means taking GENUP.

Taking BICUP does not create BIC-Eligible status by itself. Becoming BIC-Eligible involves separate qualifications and Commission requirements, including the applicable experience, application, and BIC education requirements.

If you are working toward BIC status, review the current requirements with NCREC before making decisions about your license status or education.

Do Both Courses Count Toward the 8-Hour Requirement?

Yes, when you take the Update course that applies to your status.

Your annual CE plan should look like this:

GENUP path

  • 4-hour General Update

  • 4-hour approved elective

  • 8 hours total

BICUP path

  • 4-hour Broker-in-Charge Update

  • 4-hour approved elective

  • 8 hours total

The Update course and elective are separate requirements. Completing an Update course alone does not fulfill all 8 hours of annual CE.

You can choose a practical elective based on the type of work you do. For example, Encompass offers courses such as Using RPR to Better Serve Buyers and Sellers, which focuses on property research, comparable sales, CMAs, and client reports.

Encompass Real Estate School is NCREC Provider No. 1643.

When Should You Complete Your CE?

The annual CE period runs from July 1 through June 10. For the current license year, complete your 4-hour Update and 4-hour elective by June 10, 2027.

Because CE classes cannot be completed from June 10 through June 30, do not assume you can use that period to finish missing hours. Earlier registration also gives you more flexibility if a class date no longer works with your schedule.

A practical plan is:

  1. Check your NCREC license status.

  2. Determine whether you are BIC, BIC-Eligible, or neither.

  3. Register for GENUP or BICUP.

  4. Select a separate 4-hour elective.

  5. Complete both classes before the June 10 deadline.

  6. Confirm that your completion has been reported.

After attendance and participation are verified, Encompass reports course completion to NCREC within seven calendar days. You do not need to submit the certificate yourself.

GENUP vs BICUP: Which One Should You Choose?

Here is how GENUP vs BICUP compares, so you can pick the right one before you register.

Choose GENUP if:

  • You do not hold BIC status.

  • You do not hold BIC-Eligible status.

  • You are completing the standard Update requirement for your license.

Choose BICUP if:

  • You are currently a Broker-in-Charge.

  • You hold BIC-Eligible status.

  • You want to maintain BIC-Eligible status while not currently serving as a BIC.

If you are still uncertain, check your status with NCREC before booking. You can also contact Encompass Real Estate School with questions about which class listing applies to you.

Your Next Step

Check your current status, choose the correct 4-hour Update course, and register for a separate 4-hour elective.
